In the North West of England, more lives are lost to suicide than anywhere else in the country. The ripple effects of these tragedies touch entire communities, families, friends, frontline workers, and even strangers. At EPiC HOPE, we refuse to turn away. That’s why we launched Project Community Aid, a renewed outreach effort, sending our Mobile Suicide Prevention Harbours wherever they’re needed most, meeting people in moments of crisis and bringing support to the heart of the community.
Our Mobile Suicide Prevention Harbours are already a familiar sight across Wigan, Leigh, Greater Manchester, Lancashire, the Fylde Coast, and Liverpool, welcoming people at football matches, in neighbourhoods, and supporting many organisations, businesses, and individuals who call on us. These vans are known as safe spaces where you can talk, be heard, and get support when it matters most.
Project Community Aid builds on that trust and experience. Now, we’re focusing our outreach wherever there’s need, responding to those who may be struggling with thoughts of suicide or feeling overwhelmed, offering a compassionate presence and immediate help. We don’t wait for people to find us. We actively reach out, working in partnership with local communities and services to connect with those who need us most.
We’re neighbours, friends, colleagues, ordinary people with the training and heart to do something extraordinary. Every volunteer and staff member at EPiC HOPE is trained in First Aid and the highest level of Suicide First Aid, ready to face tough nights and days together. We’re not therapists or superheroes (well, maybe the odd superhero). We’re just willing to show up and listen, and, more often than you might think, that’s enough to save a life.
This work is tough, but it’s vital. We ask our volunteers for just one to two evenings/short days a month. You’ll get top-level training, ongoing support, and you’ll be part of a team that looks after each other as much as we look after those in crisis.
